Our Purpose

The Heart of Congo, Inc. is a fundraising organization that invests and grants funds to other organizations that are working in the DRC to empower, encourage and equip the people of the Congo to raise themselves out of poverty. These organizations also teach Christian principles and in doing this share the good news of Jesus Christ in the Congo.

Students Needs are being met

These students could not attend school without your generous support. The school provides a Christian atmosphere that reaches over 200  first through sixth graders and provides adult education and skill training in the evenings. These children have just received their school uniforms!

The Heart of Congo, Inc works hand in hand with the John Malala Dignity Foundation. John, his wife Bopilo, and his team provide the boots on the ground in Bulungu, DRC to operate the New Hope school.
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo more than 70% of the population lives in poverty. Two million children in the DRC will never attend school and over 40% of children never complete secondary school. For the 2009–10 school year there were less than 36000 primary schools serving nearly 11 million students and less than 18000 secondary schools serving 3.5M others.[3]  More than half of the cost of school falls on the families. Being a female reduces the chances of getting an education much further. The public schools in the DRC are organized by ideological groups not by the government even though required by the government that children attend. About 80% of the primary schools and 75% of secondary schools are formed by non-denominational or secular groups, catholic groups and protestant groups (in that order); 12% of the schools are private and the remainder are Kimbanguist, Islamic, Salutist, Brotherhood and other ideological groups.

Many times it’s impossible for poor parents to pay school fees, buy required school uniforms or purchase the proper school supplies. Many towns and villages do not have school buildings or qualified teachers. An education can give children the opportunity to escape poverty, enhance their community and experience a better quality of life. Education reduces poverty: studies show that each year of schooling increases a person’s earnings by a worldwide average of about 10 percent. Source: World Bank FAQ 2005

Our Plan

The initial goal at the “The Heart of Congo Inc.” is to focus on one particular area of the Congo near the city of Bulungu, which is about a 6 hour drive from the Congo’s largest city Kinchasa. Near Bulungu we have a plan to ensure that children receive access to basic education and then assist them in a vocation or in the use of their training to help them become fulfilled, productive members of their communities. We built our first school called New Hope, that serves as the first school in the area for first through fifth graders. The Heart of Congo assists parents in the following ways:

Supporting the Parents
Financial assistance—assists parents with the cost of school fees and/or uniforms for their children.

School supplies—ensures that poor children have basic supplies like pens, paper and pencils

Advocacy—advocates for girls’ education to ensure they have the same opportunity as boys to attend school and develop their potential.
Campaign against Hunger- We have a goal to provide a meal to each child that attends the school daily.

Improving classroom facilities
Building new schools and facilities—A new school has been constructed to help make education a reality for impoverished children near Bulungu.

Electricity and Water— Basic needs are being met by providing solar electricity and a fresh water at the school

Providing adult education
Vocational training—Provide adults with access to job-skills training that can help them earn a sustainable income for their families. Classes for adults are for construction, hygiene, and cooking.

Literacy training— A goal is to add literacy training to help adults learn to read, write and perform basic math skills.
